Cleveland Guardians Helter Skelter 2026 pitching scheme in the Playoffs, Explained.

All Season long I kept hoping to see The Guardians plus / minus Run Differential improve. All Season long it stayed basically between -25 and -2, until the very end of the regular season when the Guardians played poorer pitching teams, made deadline trades, and ended up with a barely positive run differential.
If the Guardians Plus / Minus Run Differential had started improving by mid season and kept improving through the end of the season, maybe Vogt goes with a different Playoff Pitching strategy.
The Guardians had 6 solid starters, the logical, intriguing strategy would be to see if 2 starters per game could each go 4 innings, with Gavin Williams going 6, but, that strategy required a team that proved over the long season they could amass a solid plus runs differential, and that is why the Playoff pitching strategy went so helter skelter.
While fans focus on the excitement the Guardians making up ground has created the past 2 seasons, (as they should), the long game is a solid, plus minus run differential. Without the long game of a solid plus / minus run differential, the playoffs turn into a manic operation in which most conventional rules used during the 2026 Regular season are thrown out the window.
However, it should be noted, the Guardians went 4 playoff victories in a row scoring a total of 27 runs, which averages out to 6.75 runs per game, and the argument can be made that since 3 of those 4 games they only batted 8 innings, we can call it 7 runs per game, but it was not enough to consider the Guardians changing strategy to rely more on the Starting Pitchers and less on the constant revolving door pitching policy.
